“A glowing glory of kung fu, magic, and progressive racial politics.” – Grantland
On Friday, December 18th, multi-hyphenate talent W. Kamau Bell (comedian, social commentator, podcaster) will be presenting The Last Dragon on 35mm, with actor Taimak in attendance.
Celebrating its 30th anniversary earlier this year, The Last Dragon is a wonderfully silly and entertaining martial arts film about a determined young fighter eager to obtain the glow. However, what better way to hear about this cult classic than from someone who fell in love with it during childhood?
Here’s Mr. Bell on The Last Dragon:
When I was 13 years old there was no movie that hit me in my cinematic g spot as hard as The Last Dragon. As a lover of Bruce Lee, I wanted to be Like him. But once I saw The Last Dragon, I wanted to straight up BE Taimak AKA Leroy Green AKA Bruce Leroy. This movie has it all: martial arts, Motown music, deep meaning, many jokes, and righteous Black maleness. The least I can do is to be a part of bringing Taimak to the Roxie Theater during the 30th anniversary of this legendary, genre busting film so I, and the many others, can say, “Thank you!”
The Roxie is proud to present this special, one-night event. VIP passes are available for those who wish to meet-and-greet with Kamau Bell and Taimak before the showing. At this event, which commences at 7PM in the Little Roxie, there will free alcohol and snacks served. Of course, donations are always appreciated. Additionally, those who purchase a VIP ticket will have their seat blocked off for them at the screening.
Post-screening, Roxie creative director Sam Fragoso will moderate a sprawling Q&A with Bell and Taimak on stage. Lastly, those who wish to stick around are welcome to join us in a signing with the two guests.
We look forward to seeing you at the movies.
