Students from Theatre of Yugen’s Apprentice Program and Spring Training Session perform along with students from Masayuki Fujii-sensei’s Miyabi Kai.

Tracing its history back over six hundred years in Japan Kyogen developed as a companion to Noh, Kyogen has a universal appeal as the majority of stories display a slice of life through the use of dialogue, mime, song and dance. Kyogen requires a high level of vocal and physical control. Speaking, story-telling and singing are three distinct vocal disciplines. Performers must master a wide range of physical movements as well: dynamic acrobatics, stylized dance movements and precise pantomime. In 2001 Noh and Kyogen were designated by UNESCO as “Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity.”

Exposed to a number of short dances and songs from Kyogen and Noh plays, participants in the 2012/13 Apprentice Program and the 2013 Spring Training Session will perform at least one such piece for this, their final recital. This year, Masayuki Fujii is keen to combine his annual recital with Theatre of Yugen’s. This is both a wonderful opportunity and a tremendous honor. Mr. Fujii has been traveling to San Francisco quarterly for several years now and has been teaching a small community of earnest and interested students.

In addition to student performances, Theatre of Yugen Ensemble Members will also perform. A pot-luck picnic will follow the performance. Please join us!
