This lineup of top CalArts grads and guest artists is sure to move body and soul with an up-tempo, rousing revue of American, African and Balkan dance musics. The party starts with The Sogo TakeOver, the inventive Afrobeat orchestra that fuses group improvisation with irresistible dance rhythms—as big as a Mack truck and almost as loud. Following Sogo is the distinctively modern R&B and funk of John Macy & The Heavy Hand, kicking out the heavy grooves in sizzling original songs and revamped classics from Hitsville USA and Stax Records. Last up is the delightful Balkan brass band Orkestar MÉZÉ, whose trademark peasant funk is a mix of American soul and jazz with the musical traditions of Bulgaria and its neighbors.
The concert concludes the third annual CalArts Weekend. Dinner will available for purchase from some of L.A.’s favorite food trucks — including In-N-Out Burger and Kogi Truck.
