  • Allan Pollack — conductor
  • Marja Liisa Kay — soprano

Allan Pollack has served as music director and conductor of Symphony of the Redwoods for the past 24 years. He also currently serves as artistic director for the Mendocino Music Festival and served as artistic director/conductor for the Camellia Symphony Orchestra in Sacramento for eight years.

The SotR OrchestraVisitors and newcomers to the Symphony of the Redwoods are often amazed to discover the high caliber of our orchestra. Inspired and guided by Allan Pollack, more than fifty musicians hone their skills and blend into a powerful ensemble. About half of the regular orchestra members are from the Fort-Bragg-Mendocino area, twenty-five percent from as far as Arcata, Lake County, Sea Ranch, Covelo, and Sebastopol. The remainder are from Sacramento and the Bay Area. They attend at least six rehearsals for every concert; on concert weekends they rehearse on Friday evening and Saturday morning, then perform on Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon before returning home. A typical configuration is about fifty musicians, depending on the demands of the repertoire.

Marja Liisa Kay, soprano, is deeply dedicated to the performance and promotion of contemporary music, yet enjoys singing works within all genres. She has premiered Principle roles in a number of new operas including the world premiere of Michael Gordon and Richard Foreman’s What to Wear; the Swedish premiere of Anne Le Baron’s cyber-erotic opera, Sucktion, at the Connect Festival in Mälmö; the North American Premiere of Georges Aperghis’ Sextuor: L’Origin des Especes; and the world premiere of Anne Le Baron’s WET.
