“Deva and crew will make you dance, they will make you cry.” — Gawker
“A sublime pop creation, infused with soul, rootsy blues, and a slight island shimmer.” — Marquee Magazine
- Deva Mahal — vocals
- Steph Brown — keyboards
This power-packed duo is one of the most exciting young acts in the contemporary soul and blues world. Made up of New Zealand-born keyboardist Steph Brown and vocalist Deva Mahal, daughter of blues great Taj Mahal, Fredericks Brown can trace its origin to the Kiwi music scene, when the pair met on the festival circuit. Separate moves to Brooklyn in pursuit of individual music careers brought the women back together, leading to the formation of a long-term musical partnership. Influenced by artists including Nina Simone and Sly Stone, the duo’s approach is informed by R&B, indie rock, and gospel, combined with a gritty, blues-drenched soulfulness. Brown and Mahal have performed with a spectacular list of artists including The Roots, Meshell M’Degeocello, Etta James and Kanye West. They released their first EP Out of the Rain in 2010, followed by Land of Plenty, a remix project helmed by acclaimed Scandinavian producer Andreas Saag, best known for his work under the name Swell Session. The pair’s newest EP, Glass House Mountains, is their most assured and powerful statement yet, full of passionate songwriting and soaring, spiritually-charged melodies.
