A masterful jazz pianist with deep roots in the musical legacy of her native Brazil, Eliane Elias celebrates the centennial of legendary Brazilian composer Dorival Caymmi’s birth. An originator of the bossa nova movement, Caymmi was a true renaissance man – a singer, songwriter, actor and painter, who composed nearly 100 songs including the bossa nova classics “Doralice,” “Samba da Minha Terra,” and “Saudade da Bahia.” In The New York Times, jazz journalist Ben Ratliff wrote that Caymmi “was “perhaps second only to Antônio Carlos Jobim in ‘establishing a songbook of [the 20th] century’s Brazilian identity.” For this performance, dubbed “100 Years of Caymmi: A Night in Bahia,” Elias is joined by guitar great Romero Lubambo and Bahia-born percussionist Marivaldo Dos Santos. A major figure in Brazilian jazz, Lubambo arrived in the U.S. in 1985 and formed the sublime Trio da Paz with bassist Nilson Matta and percussionist Duduka da Fonseca, one of the most acclaimed groups in Brazilian music. Lubambo has worked with Dizzy Gillespie, Dianne Reeves, Wynton Marsalis and many others. Dos Santos is a marvelous musician who has contributed his artistry to work with Steve Coleman, Vinicius Cantuária, Daniela Mercury, and the New York production of the percussion-based musical Stomp.
