A captivating performer who combines the sensuous, sun-splashed melodicism of Brazil with the harmonic sophistication of New York City, São Paulo-born Eliane Elias brings together the best of two extravagantly rich musical worlds. For this special performance to open the 2014-2015 Season, she pays tribute to the timeless Brazil-meets-jazz collaboration of Stan Getz, João Gilberto and Antonio Carlos Jobim that created the classic 1964 album Getz/Gilberto. With songs that are now considered immortal standards including “The Girl from Ipanema,” “Corcovado” and “Desafinado,” Getz/Gilberto jump-started the international bossa nova craze and is described by JazzTimes as “…essential for all serious jazz collections.” Standing in for Stan Getz on this date is guest tenor saxophonist Harry Allen, an artist who has developed a beautifully expressive sound informed by the tenor titans of the 1930s. In describing Harry Allen, jazz writer and lyricist Gene Lees wrote “Stan Getz was once asked his idea of the perfect tenor saxophone soloist. His answer was, ‘My technique, Al Cohn’s ideas, and Zoot’s time.’ The fulfillment of that ideal may well be embodied in Harry Allen.”
