This exclusive dance party conceived by the Bay Area’s queen of swing celebrates the wildly popular Swing Era dance and New York’s legendary Savoy Ballroom, where the dance gained fame and which served as the unofficial home for the era’s iconic musicians. Born in Harlem in the early 1930s, theop developed along with the great music of the time, accompanying the big band sound of Count Basie, Chick Webb, Fletcher Henderson and Benny Goodman. Webb’s saxophonist, Edgar Sampson, composed the ballroom’s signature song, “Stompin’ at the Savoy,” which is sure to get the crowd up and dancing on this special night, which will feature Smith’s superb Red Hot Skillet Lickers augmented by a half-dozen additional horn players and a troupe of professional Lindy Hop dancers. Fronted by the sultry Smith, an alluring singer whose style draws on Dinah Washington and Bessie Smith, Billie Holiday and Little Esther Phillips, the band features a rogue’s gallery of robustly swinging soloists who cut their teeth with everyone from Big Joe Turner to Ray Charles. Join us for this one-of-a-kind event! Open dance floor!
