“Benny Green is a consummate jazz pianist. He’s mastered all the past styles from Kansas City stride to Bill Evans to bebop and beyond…” — All About Jazz

“Green is a young classicist… he plays funky and hard, and breathes not only bebop but Oscar Peterson’s virtuosic effusions as well.” — The New York Times

  • Benny Green — piano
  • David Wong — bass
  • Kenny Washington — drums

Nobody plays straight-ahead modern jazz piano with more swinging joy and finesse than Benny Green, the one-time Berkeley High wunderkind who developed his leanly lyrical and propulsive playing in the star-making bands of three powerful master musicians: singer Betty Carter, drummer Art Blakey and bassist Ray Brown. A successful bandleader himself for 20 years, Green has released a string of fine records, including Greens and Kaleidoscope on Blue Note, and Telarc’s Naturally with bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Russell Malone, as well as playing on scores of records by top artist like Diana Krall, Freddie Hubbard and Milt Jackson. In 1993, the great pianist Oscar Peterson picked Green to receive Toronto’s Glenn Gould International Protégé Prize in Music and later recorded the dazzling Oscar & Benny album with him. Green’s 2013 CD Magic Beans features his elegant and hard-bopping original music.

Reviewing a concert last year, the San Jose Mercury said Green “laid it all out: his leaping percussive touch and nonstop bebop flow, his splayed joy-spring chords, Thelonious Monk stabs and gospel voicings.” The pianist’s crack new trio plays a rare four-night run in the intimate Joe Henderson Lab.
