On the heels of his blockbuster engagement at New York’s Village Vanguard, maverick guitarist Marc Ribot brings his sublimely expressive jazz trio to the Miner Auditorium to conclude his four-night residency. Consisting of Ribot, bass legend Henry Grimes and drummer Chad Taylor, the band was formed from the rhythm section of his Spiritual Unity band, a group devoted to re-creating the music of iconic saxophonist Albert Ayler. Like Spiritual Unity, Ribot’s trio takes inspiration from Ayler, infusing his ecstatic spirit into their powerfully dynamic improvisations. Henry Grimes has a special connection to Ayler, working with the saxophonist in the mid-60s and appearing on a number of his most enduring recordings, including the landmark 1967 Impulse date, Albert Ayler in Greenwich Village. Grimes has one of the most compelling stories to emerge from the jazz world in recent times, becoming disillusioned with music in the late 1960s and effectively disappearing for 35 years. Upon his “rediscovery” in 2002, he has been in constant demand as a leader and sideman. Taylor is a founding member of the acclaimed collective Chicago Underground and worked extensively with AACM saxophonist Fred Anderson. This special performance is a CD release event for the trio’s new album on Pi Recordings, which documents their blockbuster Village Vanguard engagement.
