“The most provocative thinker in current jazz.” — Rolling Stone on Jason Moran

“(Billy Harper is) …a soul of sensitivity and intelligence, as well as of explosive, majestic passion.” — San Francisco Chronicle

The final night of Jason Moran’s residency is a one-time-only concert of solos, duos and trios featuring a pair of jazz giants who made indelible marks on the art form, pianist Randy Weston and saxophonist Billy Harper. A 2001 NEA Jazz Master, Randy Weston’s impact has been enormous, as a pianist, composer and innovator. A disciple of Thelonious Monk, numerous visits to Africa and living in Morocco have brought a powerful African influence to his work, which includes the pioneering Africa-meets-jazz recording Afrika Uhuru with texts by poet Langston Hughes, and the spiritually-charged sessions African Cookbook, Blue Moses and Tanjah. Much of Weston’s music has been in collaboration with his musical soulmate, legendary arranger Melba Liston, including his recent recording, 2010’s The Storyteller. Weston is a 2011 Guggenheim Fellow. Fiery saxophonist Billy Harper has built upon the legacy of the great John Coltrane, infusing his monstrous chops with a deeply lyrical sensibility. A veteran of drumming legend Art Blakey’s immortal Jazz Messengers, the Thad Jones/Mel Lewis Orchestra and genius arranger Gil Evans, Harper released a procession of seminal albums rife with themes of social consciousness, including the acclaimed Capra Black and Black Saint, which was the first record issued on the iconic label of the same name. Harper originally met Weston at a 1972 music festival in Tangiers, and they have collaborated on numerous occasions, most recently on their new Sunnyside duo album, The Roots of the Blues. The pair reunite on the Miner Auditorium stage with Resident Artistic Director Moran for this unforgettable event.

About Jason Moran
An ambitiously creative musician who won DownBeat magazine’s triple crown for Jazz Artist, Pianist and Album of the Year in 2011, Jason Moran is jazz’s wild card, a probing conceptualist who transforms everything he touches into a bracingly contemporary statement. Recipient of the coveted MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship in 2010 and the new Kennedy Center Artistic Advisor for Jazz, the 37-year-old pianist has developed at an exponential rate in the company of his supremely flexible quartet the Bandwagon, honing an approach that soaks up influences and reconfigures them to suit his own exacting needs. As a Resident Artistic Director, the multi-faceted Moran is performing in a wide-ranging array of settings.
