“The most provocative thinker in current jazz.” — Rolling Stone on Jason Moran

“…the earthy majesty of her voice, a contralto as rich and supple as vintage leather.” — The New York Times on Cassandra Wilson

  • Jason Moran – piano
  • Cassandra Wilson – vocals

Celebrated vocalist Cassandra Wilson joins Jason Moran for his second night of residency in an intimate duo performance, recapturing the magic of their collaboration on Wilson’s Grammy-winning 2008 standards project, Loverly. Wilson was a founding member of Brooklyn’s groundbreaking M-Base Collective along with saxophonist Steve Coleman and pianist Geri Allen, breaking through to a massive mainstream audience with her blockbuster 1993 Blue Note debut, Blue Light ‘Til Dawn. A singer possessed of a deep, velvety and haunting contralto, Wilson has honed a remarkably flexible approach, at home belting out jazz chestnuts, caressing banjo-tinged country spirituals and inhabiting the deepest Delta blues. She claimed DownBeat magazine’s Jazz Vocalist of the Year honors for three consecutive years, won a Grammy for her 1996 Blue Note release, New Moon Daughter, and was named “America’s Best Singer” by Time magazine. On this special evening for SFJAZZ Members only, Wilson and Moran explore the most soul-baring setting for a vocalist and pianist, promising a performance of rare beauty.

About Jason Moran
An ambitiously creative musician who won DownBeat magazine’s triple crown for Jazz Artist, Pianist and Album of the year in 2011, Jason Moran is jazz’s wild card, a probing conceptualist who transforms everything he touches into a bracingly contemporary statement. Recipient of the coveted MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship in 2010 and the new Kennedy Center Artistic Advisor for Jazz, the 37-year-old pianist has developed at an exponential rate in the company of his supremely flexible quartet the Bandwagon, honing an approach that soaks up influences and reconfigures them to suit his own exacting needs. As a Resident Artistic Director, the multi-faceted Moran is performing in a wide-ranging array of settings.
