“Toussaint sounds as eternal as New Orleans.” — National Public Radio

“He has honed a piano style that’s supportive and allusive; a little trill or tremolo sums up all the splashy joys of New Orleans patriarchs like Professor Longhair and James Booker.” — The New York Times

One of the most iconic and influential figures in New Orleans music, Allen Toussaint is an artist synonymous with the gritty, funky R&B of the Crescent City. As a performer, songwriter, producer and arranger, Toussaint has played an integral part in many of the greatest hits to emerge from New Orleans since the 1950s, and his indelible contributions to popular music earned him a much-deserved induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998. He produced and composed for New Orleans mainstays Dr. John, The Meters and Irma Thomas, and his compositions have been recorded and performed by a veritable who’s-who of pop artists, such as the Pointer Sisters, Ringo Starr, The Rolling Stones and Otis Redding. From writing immortal tunes like “Working in a Coal Mine,” “Fortune Teller” and “Get Out of My Life Woman” to producing albums for Patti Labelle and Paul McCartney, Toussaint’s influence is as strong as ever. His most recent Nonesuch studio album, The Bright Mississippi, pays tribute to the jazz legends who inspired him, from Louis Armstrong to Thelonious Monk, and features a backing band including Joshua Redman, Brad Mehldau, Nicholas Payton and Marc Ribot. For his SFJAZZ appearance, Toussant performs music spanning the breadth of his incredible career in a rare evening of solo piano and voice, bringing the audience up close a personal with a true music legend.
