“Hadero’s sound is a unique blend of jazz, Ethiopia, the San Francisco art scene and visceral poetry; it paints pictures in your head as you listen.” — NPR

“She sings of fragility, hope and self-empowerment, and exudes all three. What’s irresistible, above all, is her cradling, sensuous, gentle sound. She is stunning.” — San Francisco Chronicle

  • Meklit Hadero – vocals
  • Darren Johnson – trumpet
  • Sam Bevan – acoustic bass
  • Lorca Hart – drums

Meklit Hadero returns to the Miner Auditorium after her magical Season 1 performance. The beguiling Ethiopian-born American singer-songwriter, whose floating melodies and dancing grooves draw on sources as varied as East African music, Nina Simone and Joni Mitchell, sings classic Ethiopian tunes and originals with her superb San Francisco trio. A TED Global Fellow, Hadero became a sensation with the release of her 2010 debut On A Day Like This, an enchanting album featuring her delicately luminous original songs and traditional Amharic melodies. The album received rave reviews and featured coverage on PBS, National Geographic and NPR. The singer has been on a meteoric rise ever since, spreading her distinctive brand of magic on numerous international tours, including a pair of trips to her native Ethiopia, and criss-crossing the U.S. Whether performing with her transfixing world-trance band Nefasha Ayer, grooving with classic R&B belter Quinn DeVeaux on their new album Meklit & Quinn, or breaking down walls with her African hip-hop project CopperWire, Hadero has established herself as a modern queen of soul.
