San Francisco jazz treasure Paula West brings her top-flight East Coast quartet to the intimate environs of the Joe Henderson Lab for a two-night engagement, their only Bay Area appearances this year. Among the most in-demand singers on the international scene, West criss-crosses the globe for concerts and cabaret residencies in San Francisco, Istanbul, Moscow, and New York, where her nights at the Algonquin Hotel’s famed Oak Room have earned her three straight New York magazine Nightlife awards as “Outstanding Female Jazz Vocalist.” The New York Times has been particularly vocal in their praise for West, singling out her “thickly textured voice [that] has ripened into a driving expressive force” and an “ever-deepening feel for the blues.” In February, the singer appeared with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra to perform Marsalis’ Pultizer Prize-winning Blood on the Fields.
For this remarkable match of artist and venue, West will reprise selected songs from her repertoire and introduce new material chosen specifically for this engagement. Her superb quartet is the same group featured on her latest release on the Hi Horse label, Live at Jazz Standard, with the remarkable pianist Xavier Davis stepping in for the late, great George Mesterhazy. From timeless jazz standards to smoky blues and country gems, from Cole Porter to Bob Dylan, an evening with Paula West is as good as it gets.
