Come along with us for Ticket of No Return (Bildnis einer Trinkerin, 108 Min., 1979) by Ulrike Oettinger as part of the Queer as German Folk Noon Film Series at the San Francisco Public Library.
Director Ulrike Ottinger enriched the underground scene with great imagery of lesbian and gay life and identities in films like Die Betörung der blauen Matrosen (The Enchantment of the Blue Sailors) and Madame X before she finally created a brand-new category with her film Bildnis einer Trinkerin (Ticket of No Return). With never-before-seen images of Berlin, her star Tabea Blumenschein as the eponymous alcoholic woman, experiences a series of encounters with archetypal figures, played by underground icons such as Magdalena Montezuma, Nina Hagen, Kurt Raab, Volker Spengler and, last but not least, Lutze, the artist’s mother from New York, as a drunkard in Bahnhof Zoo. A true cult film!
