Opening Reception for the Photography of Peter B Kaars, discussion panel, and a rare screening of Noisey People a film by Tim Perkis

Self taught, Peter B Kaars started photography in earnest in Amsterdam in the 80s. Although immediately drawn to theater and music performance, this specialty took really off when he was one of the regulars at Paul Panhuysen’s Apollohuis in Eindhoven in the 90s. This work has been published in several magazines and books as well exhibited in Eindhoven (1995) and Tokyo (1996). After transferring to the San Francisco Bay Area, Kaars has been roaming the small venues for experimental music since 2000, organized by the likes of Outsound, San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, 23Five, 21 Grand, Meridian Gallery, Tom’ s Place, Mills College, 7Hz, The Lab and Center for New Music. Kaars’ pictures can be found all over the Internetas well as on his dedicated website PeterBKaars.com.

NOISY PEOPLE is a feature length video documentary that opens a window into a tightly-knit group of unusual sound artists and musicians from the San Francisco improvisational music community. Filmmaker Tim Perkis, himself a well-respected player in the Bay Area experimental music scene, followed his subjects for a year, filming them in their homes and studios, rehearsals and performances. What emerges is a set of funny and lively portraits of some very creative and quirky people — and a portrait of a way of life outside the commercial musical mainstream of America. They’re not making a living at it — but these artists have pursued their work passionately and in the process have created a world-wide following and a supportive community at home. These are people, who, as composer John Shiurba put it, “aren’t going somewhere, but who ARE somewhere.” FEATURING: George Cremaschi, Tom Djll, Greg Goodman, Phillip Greenlief, Cheryl Leonard, Dan Plonsey, Gino Robair, Damon Smith. Also appearing are dozens of other creative musicians, including Anthony Braxton, Fred Frith and Jack Wright.

The Outsound New Music Summit is a week long festival in California for the most creative and experimental music of the San Francisco Bay Area music scene and beyond. We feature rare and intriguing world premieres, amazing unknown artists, underground legends, and family friendly educational events. The Summit is important on the West Coast because it supports the local and surrounding communities striving to find new voices in a fun and engaging festival environment.
