Orchestra Gold (OG), Ritmos Tropicosmos and the Ivy Room are SO happy to be back. So happy in fact, they will be spinning you back and forth in psychedelic, tropical, groovy juiciness for an entire warm summer day! Featuring Psychedelic Cumbias (by Ritmos), and Psych African-tinged Rock (by OG), this is going to be the comeback show you’re glad you staying in town for. Mariam Diakite (lead singer of OG) also is teaching a donation based dance class to start off the event, featuring the amazingly talented djembe player Moussa Camara (Mali).
Its 1976 and you just stepped inside a smokey club in Bamako, Mali. The air is thick with the gritty analog sounds of funky folkloric music, psychedelic guitar swirling with jazzy horns and hypnotic bass. As the crowd shakes their bell bottoms to the infectious grooves, the singer commands the stage with her soulful vocals and dance moves that give James Brown a run for his money. This is the vibe that Oakland’s own Orchestra Gold creates in their live shows as well as their recordings.
Ritmos Tropicosmos is a seven piece psychedelic cumbia group, from Oakland, creating heavy tropical rhythms with an emphasis on live percussion, organ and synthesizers. Their inspiration is the sum of their collective minds – meeting at the intersection of multiple timelines. A crossroads of electricity and molten earth, somewhere within the traditional rhythms of the past and futuristic textures of The Now.
Tiny Towns Concert Series is supported by Alameda nonprofit West End Arts District (WEAD). Founded in 2015, WEAD presents a wide range of arts programming as well as providing fiscal sponsorship, advocacy and operational support to artists wanting to present work locally.
