Guitarist Karl Evangelista and keyboardist Rei Scampavia (sometimes known as Oakland duo Grex) perform pieces from Alice Coltrane’s seminal album Journey in Satchidananda. The pair invoke electronic textures and expansive improvisational ideas to offer a reworking of Coltrane’s material that is both fresh and suitably ethereal.
Filipino-American guitarist/composer Karl Evangelista ranks among a new wave of musicians pushing the traditions of jazz and experimental rock into the 21st century. Working alongside the likes of Scott Amendola, Louis Moholo-Moholo, Trevor Watts, and Asian Improv aRts, Evangelista explores multicultural concepts with sonic intensity and political fervor.
Rei Scampavia is a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and conservation biologist living in Oakland, California. Her music explores the intersection between deep sonic exploration, environmentalism, and lilting song.
