“One of the 21st century’s finest jazz improvisers” (The Guardian), saxophonist Joshua Redman has been stirring audiences around the world with his passionate and thoughtful playing since 1993, when his self-titled debut album on Warner Bros. made him a star. After recent work with Still Dreaming, his GRAMMY-nominated tribute project to his father Dewey Redman and his Ornette Coleman alumni band Old and New Dreams, Redman presides over a reunion of his early working quartet for the first time in two decades, performing material from their new Nonesuch release, Come What May.

A fluent, deeply communicative soloist and composer whose associates have included Charlie Haden, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny, the Rolling Stones, Christian McBride, Brad Mehldau, The Bad Plus, and other prime musicians, Redman was the winner of the 1991 Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition and has led a series of dynamic bands – acoustic, electric or both – playing his original music and songs by artists as varied as Ornette Coleman, Rogers & Hammerstein and Bob Dylan. A former SFJAZZ Artistic Director and founding member of the SFJAZZ Collective, Redman and his quartet including pianist Aaron Goldberg, bassist Reuben Rogers and drummer Gregory Hutchison united in the studio for Come What May — their first album together since 2001’s brilliant song cycle Passage of Time.

Joshua Redman Quartet’s ‘Come What May’ is not just a strong contender for 2019’s best jazz album, but also one of the year’s essential releases overall.
