Gay Freedom Band of Los Angeles
- Justin Raines — artistic director
In the spring of 1978, a small group of musicians gathered in gay activist Morris Kight’s living room for the first rehearsal of a new group – a Lesbian and Gay band, called the Great American Yankee Freedom Band of Los Angeles. The group soon outgrew these quarters, and by October 1979 it was able to bring about 100 musicians, flag carriers, and baton twirlers to lead the first National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. During the remainder of the 20thCentury the group marched in community parades and pride celebrations throughout the United States and also presented numerous concerts for Southern Californians.
