9am to 11am | Romany Punk Fusion and Fantasy with IrinaXara | All Levels
This workshop explores the relationships between primarily Eastern European Romany movement and “Gypsy Punk” music, a genre famously pioneered by the band Gogol Bordello. IrinaXara will draw focus to the characterization inherent in Romany dance interpretation and matters of stereotyping and gender(ed) portrayal. The workshop will center dually on building characterization and interpretation, as well as study of ethnic movement and flavor and will also help students bring their own signature style to the genre. With discussion of ethnic movement there will be a short discussion of genre musical traits and musicality. Though not the main focus of the workshop, the cultural influence of Steampunk fantasy may also be discussed.
11am to 1pm | Island Influences with Elizabeth Mahina | All Levels
From graceful Hula hands, to precise and fast Tahitian hip movements, tribal fusion can borrow wonderful inspiration from Polynesian dance. This workshop transforms basic Polynesian dance steps and builds them into an exciting tribal fusion choreography to enhance your repertoire. Students may find it helpful to bring a notebook.
