One of the greatest bands in contemporary Irish music makes its SFJAZZ debut with a Celtic celebration of the holidays, featuring a guest appearance by the acclaimed folk singer Karan Casey. Named for the ancient Gaelic harvest festival of Lughnasadh, Lúnasa was formed in 1996 by members of major Irish bands The Waterboys and Moving Cloud and quickly established themselves at the forefront of the Celtic music scene. Their self-titled debut release was a best seller in Ireland and was named to the top albums of the year list by New York’s Irish Echo newspaper, and the band has performed over 1500 shows in 36 countries since then, releasing seven acclaimed discs on the Compass and Green Linnet labels before launching their own, Lúnasa Records. Lúnasa’s newest album is in collaboration with Ireland’s RTE Concert Orchestra.

Karan Casey is one of the most popular and innovative vocalists in Irish music. She has released six albums and performed with a range of artists including the popular U.S.-based Irish band Solas as well as James Taylor, Paul Winter, Liam Clancy, Mick Maloney and the Dubliners, and Imelda May. Join us for this special event, celebrating the season in the Irish tradition.
