“Remarkable, beautiful, towering voice…” — The New York Times

  • Claudia Villela — voice, percussion, piano
  • Bob Basa — guitar
  • Gary Brown — bass
  • Celso Alberti — drums/percussion

Celebrate the beautiful rhythms of Brazil with vocalist/pianist Claudia Villela and her quartet. Villela’s extraordinary vocal range and percussive pianist style will delight audiences as she and her group showcase the music of her native homeland in a perfect melding with jazz. From the internationally known samba and bossa nova to the rich traditions of the choro, baiao, maracatu, frevo and more, this special matinee performance will highlight the bounty of Brazilian music.

Family Workshop w/ Loco Bloco at Joe Henderson Lab, 12:15-1:15pm
Join percussionists Pedro Gómez and Alpha “Bongo” Sidibe from the Bay Area’s own Loco Bloco for a hands-on experience in the Northeastern Brazilian ensemble percussion style known as bloco afro, which honors the drumming traditions of the African Diaspora along with the principles of community and activism. Instruments will be provided!

Capacity is limited and reservations are on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign ups take place at a table in the lobby on the day of the concert.

A limited number of free tickets are available to Bay Area school or community groups. If you are interested in bringing your school or community group to a Family Matinee, please fill out our ticket request form.
