Daren Burns Trio

  • Daren Burns — fretless bass, 6-string bass (John ‘Drumbo’ French, Vinny Golia, Wadada Leo Smith)
  • Motoko Honda — keys (Wadada Leo Smith, Elliot Sharp, Nels Cline)
  • Cody Remaklus — percussion (Instructor World Percussion, UNR)

Daren Burns, fretted and fretless electric bass player, composer, and improviser has been playing and composing music for over twenty years. Much of his musical interest lies in the area of improvisation and how to make new systems for developing improvisation in new ways. In the last few years he has also become interested in Indian rhythmic and melodic systems.

The Daren Burns Trio will be playing eclectic, groove oriented instrumental music that consists of the ensembles takes on musical classics by John Coltrane, Duke Ellington, Jimi Hendrix, Nine Inch Nails, and more. Burns, Honda, and Remaklus are spirited improvisers that will put new twists on familiar tunes and create spontaneous sounds and textures weaved throughout.

About Daren Burns’ playing, Doug Simpson from audaud.com said: “Burns establishes a framework but always sets up invigorating opportunities for improvisational possibilities: Burns proves it is better to think outside the box than create a new box.” and Jerome Wilson at Cadence Magazine said: “Daren Burns is one of the few younger electric bass players I’ve heard who owes more to Steve Swallow than Stanley Clarke or Jaco Pastorius”

About Motoko Honda, Chris Barton of the Los Angeles Times said: “(Don’t miss: A solo performance from local) keyboard alchemist Motoko Honda, whose mix of piano and electronics is a sonic adventure all her own.”

About Cody Remaklus: He has been performing professionally for 18 years primarily as a percussionist/hybrid drum set player, he has also studied and performed different forms of drumming and dance from Cuba, Africa, Brazil, India and more. He has toured with several musical groups in the United States, Latin America and Europe.
